The former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has voiced his deep frustration and sorrow over the worsening state of Nigeria’s roads.

Obi shared his concern, stating that the deteriorating road conditions reflect how far the country has fallen, with both the people and leadership seemingly indifferent to the problem.

Reflecting on his recent travel experience, the former Anambra State governor recounted how his journey from Ekpoma to Benin in Edo State, which once took about two hours, was significantly prolonged due to the deplorable state of the roads.

Using his X handle on Monday, Obi shared his weekend travel itinerary, saying: “On Saturday, I travelled for six and a half hours from Onitsha to Igarra, Akoko-Edo by road, to join our Labour Party governorship candidate for Edo State, Barrister Olumide Akpata, and continued our campaign through Jattu-Uzairue and Auchi.

He went on to describe the trip, adding, “On leaving Auchi around 6 PM, but due to the bad roads, it took us about an hour and a half to reach Ekpoma, where enthusiastic Obidients had been waiting all day.”

Obi expressed further dismay, stating, “From Ekpoma, it took us about 3 hours to drive to Benin. I must express my sadness because the total journey used to take about 2 hours, but the poor road conditions made it much longer.”

He lamented the numerous accidents he witnessed along the way, concluding, “We encountered over a dozen accidents along the way, and my heart kept bleeding, wondering how we have allowed ourselves to descend so low to a situation where we, the leaders no longer care.”
