The Action Peoples Party (APP) has emerged as a dominant force in the recent local government elections in Rivers State, winning an impressive 314 out of 319 available councillorship seats across the state’s 23 local government areas.
The results were announced by Justice Adolphus Enebeli, Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
According to the official results, the APP claimed victory in 314 wards, while the All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Young People’s Party (YPP) each secured one seat. This significant win for the APP highlights its overwhelming support in the state.
The results also put to rest any doubts about the APC’s participation in the October 5th local government elections. Prior to the elections, the party’s caretaker committee chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, had suggested that the APC would not partake, raising concerns among party loyalists.
However, the election results confirm that the APC did indeed contest, albeit with limited success.
Notably, Chief Emeka Beke, the factional chairman of the Rivers APC, had previously asserted the party’s readiness for the elections, stating, “As the authentic chairman of APC in Rivers State, we are fully prepared for the election.”
