BREAKING: Protests Erupt In Enugu Over Alleged Police Killing Of Musician ‘Igbo Jah’

Tensions are high in Enugu State as protests have broken out following the alleged killing of well-known local musician, Okezie Mba, popularly known as Igbo Jah by a police inspector.

Naija News earlier reported that the incident occurred on the evening of October 25, 2024, at the headquarters of the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad in Enugu State.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer for the Enugu State Command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, Igbo Jah was leaving the squad’s headquarters after a visit when he was fatally shot by a police officer under circumstances that are still being investigated. The shooting happened at approximately 8:10 p.m.

The Enugu State police confirmed that the inspector in question has been detained, and a thorough investigation is ongoing.

According to Saharareporters, the protests have escalated, with hundreds of outraged residents marching to the anti-cult unit’s headquarters, attempting to set it on fire.

Police officers on site managed to prevent the building from being torched, but demonstrators have blocked multiple roads in the state capital, including Onu Asata, burning tires and chanting in protest.

Officers have responded by deploying tear gas to disperse the crowds.

The sight of burning tires—a symbol of protest and frustration—marks the streets as residents call for justice in Igbo Jah’s killing.

The situation remains volatile as protesters demand accountability and answers surrounding the musician’s death.

Meanwhile, the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of Igbo Jah.

Governor Mbah, in a statement released on Saturday, termed the shooting as “unfortunate” and extended his condolences to the family of the deceased.
