Former President, Muhammadu Buhari has expressed profound grief over the tragic oil tanker explosion in Majiya, Jigawa State, which claimed the lives of over 105 people and left several others injured.
In a statement released by his media aide, Garba Shehu, Buhari described the incident as one of the deadliest tragedies in Nigeria’s recent history.
He extended his condolences to the families of the victims and offered prayers for the swift recovery of those injured.
The explosion, which occurred on Tuesday, was confirmed by the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Shiisu Adam.
The disaster unfolded when a petrol tanker overturned and caught fire, resulting in widespread chaos and devastation.
Reports indicate that at least 55 individuals suffered varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Ringim General Hospital.
Witnesses stated that many local residents had gathered at the scene, reportedly attempting to collect leaking fuel from the overturned tanker when the explosion occurred.
Such tragic incidents are not uncommon in Nigeria, where impoverished citizens often risk their lives to salvage spilled fuel from damaged or crashed tankers, leading to catastrophic consequences when ignitions happen.
In his statement, Buhari expressed sorrow over the incident, labeling it a painful loss not only for the victims’ families but for the entire nation.
He urged for compassion and support for those affected, emphasizing the need for improved safety measures.
