Elon Musk’s internet service company, Starlink, has slashed the price of its hardware by 45% in Nigeria

Elon Musk’s satellite internet service under SpaceX, Starlink has paused its recent subscription price increase for Nigerian users.

The decision, announced to subscribers on Thursday, came as the company addresses regulatory concerns raised by Nigeria’s telecom authorities.

Recall that three weeks ago, Starlink announced a 97% increase in monthly subscriptions, raising the price from N38,000 to N75,000. The company also hiked the cost of its installation kit for new users by 34%, from N440,000 to N590,000, leading to considerable pushback from subscribers who found the costs prohibitive.

Nigeria’s third-largest internet service provider, Starlink serves approximately 24 million internet users.

In a message to customers, Starlink assured subscribers who had already been billed the higher rate that they would receive a refund or credit.

The company also reminded users of their option to cancel subscriptions if they no longer found the service viable.

Last month, we raised Starlink’s monthly service price in Nigeria to counter inflation and support continuous, reliable service,” Starlink said in its message. “Today, we’re temporarily halting this increase to navigate the regulatory challenges we face. We remain committed to high-speed internet in Nigeria, but achieving necessary service improvements hinges on regulatory cooperation. Without it, our ability to continue service may be compromised.”
