A popular textile market in Kano, widely recognized as Kantin Kwari, was consumed by fire at midnight on Sunday.
Naija News understands that the fire incident resulted in the destruction of approximately ten shops within one of the market’s malls.
Reports revealed that the fire originated in a Gidan Inuwa Mai Bayajidda Street structure, which houses over a hundred shops, incinerating all textile merchandise in the affected ten shops and causing damages estimated in millions of naira.
Channels Television quoted eyewitnesses as having reported that they made considerable efforts to control the fire and rescue some items before the arrival of the fire service.
Musa Abba, a shop owner, shared his experience regarding the outbreak: “The fire started around 10pm while we were parading the market for security. When we saw the fire we quickly alerted others and started to remove the goods we could to reduce the level of destruction.”
Another shop owner who lost everything was distressed while lamenting. He said: “God is the one who allows everything that happens to us, see all my goods now rubble. We hope the government will support us to recover.”
Upon quenching the inferior, the Kano State Fire Service Command identified the cause of the fire as a solar electricity fault.
Management of the Kantin Kwari textile market is calling for improved fire safety measures to forestall the re-occurrence of fire outbreaks.
