The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has commended the Nigeria Police for pulling out of the October 5th local government elections.
The Rivers State PDP Chairman, Aaron Chukwuemeka, advised Governor Siminalaya Fubara to call off the local council elections.
Chukwuemeka stated that violence may characterize the election with the police stating its personnel would not participate in the election.
Speaking during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Friday, Chukwuemeka, reiterated that the PDP would not participate in the election.
Chukwuemeka also said the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw the voters’ register from the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) was a great development.
Naija News reported that amid tension surrounding the local government elections, Governor Fubara has maintained that the election will be held on Saturday.
However, the Rivers State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Grace Iringe-Koko, said the command’s personnel would not allow a breakdown of law and order in the state.
“The Nigeria Police Force encourages all parties to seek appropriate legal redress if they feel aggrieved by any decisions or actions related to the election process.
“The Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to maintaining law and order and will not stand idly by in the face of potential disturbances.
“Necessary actions will be taken to enforce the court’s orders. All Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders have been directed to ensure full compliance with the judgment of the Federal High Court,” Iringe-Koko said.
