President Bola Tinubu announced the scrapping of the Ministry of Sports Development after the meeting of the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday, 23 October 2024 in Abuja.

The information is contained in a letter from the presidency under the heading : Statements on the structuring of the federal ministry and ministerial portfolios.

This is a significant reshuffle, the Federal Government has replaced Nigeria’s Ministry of Sports Development with the reestablished National Sports Commission (NSC), marking a pivotal shift in sports governance.

The appointment of Shehu Dikko, former Chairman of the League Management Company
(LMC), as the new NSC Chairman is seen as a strategic move to revitalize Nigerian sports administration.

President Bola Tinubu, in an official statement on Wednesday, confirmed the restructuring of the ministry into the NSC, thanking the outgoing members of the Federal Executive Council for their service. He urged the newly appointed officials to view their roles as a call to serve the nation with utmost dedication. “All appointees must understand the administration’s determination to set Nigeria on the path to irreversible growth,” Tinubu said, emphasizing that their contributions would be critical to the government’s broader development agenda.

Dikko’s appointment as Chairman is expected to bring extensive experience to the commission, especially given his tenure at the helm of the LMC, where he oversaw professional football management in Nigeria. The NSC, which had previously been dissolved, is now tasked with overseeing the country’s sports policies and administration, a role last undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Sports Development.

The change is part of a broader government effort to restructure and streamline sports management in Nigeria, with an emphasis on improving infrastructure, talent development, and international competitiveness.

Tinubu’s administration is focusing on these reforms to foster a culture of sports excellence and enhance Nigeria’s global sports profile.

This move also reflects a broader realignment of the federal government’s priorities in sectors such as sports, youth empowerment, and economic development, with the hope of driving growth through better governance and targeted investments.
